Your World is Your Oyster
I once had a friend who had been trying to attain a lucid dream for quite a while. Finally after weeks of practice he entered his first lucid dream.
I asked him what he had done in his dream, expecting to hear stories of wonderment.
He turned to me and said “I found a newspaper and started to read it. I noticed that the words kept changing. (Common in dreams). After about two minutes, I realized that I was wasting the dream and at that point woke up.”
So after all his efforts, he finally had a lucid dream and then…… read a newspaper!
I laughed at this when he told me because it is quite common for people to spend a lot of effort trying to have a lucid dream and then when they do have one, simply not having any ideas what to do because they haven’t fore thought about it.
As the title of this section says, “Your world is your oyster”. This means that you can do basically anything your imagination can think of.
There are a few common themes that people seem to follow so I will cover those first.
Flying
I do not know why, but many people seem to naturally start to fly when they become lucid. It’s a really simple thing to try.
Some people fly like Superman, some fly by flapping their arms. My technique alternates between a Superman style and for a more leisurely pace, a sort of swimming breast stroke style through the air.
The trick is to believe that you can. The minute you doubt yourself for any reason, you will fail. Flying is possible, believe it. Try jumping in the air. More often than not you will just stay there. Alternatively try launching yourself like Superman straight up. Sometimes I just lie back and float like I am in a swimming pool. Anything is possible. Find the technique that works best for you.
Make a doorway to your subconscious
I have been mastering this technique in more recent years. It is a way in which you can get a lot more from things that you have learnt (in the real world).
When you read a technical book or magazine or even a novel, there may be parts that you didn’t understand or lost track of. If you feel that you couldn’t quite grasp a storyline or mathematical formula etc. then this method is for you.
Although YOU didn’t feel as though you had grasped something properly, your subconscious may have.
In your lucid dream try and conjure up a person that represents your subconscious. Just the same way as you would conjure up a famous person. (See below) Then simply ask the questions that you wanted answers to. Hopefully your subconscious will ‘talk’ to you via this ‘person’.
I have tried this many times. Sometimes the answers you receive can be quite surprising!
Magic powers
One morning, I woke up and looked at the curtains thinking how nice it would be if they were open letting the sunlight in. At that instance, the curtains flew wide open and in came the sun.
Wow!.
I then looked at the lamp by the side of my bed. I gave a quick flick of my head to the right and the lamp flew across the room and hit the wall. “I have telekinetic powers” I thought.
Then it dawned on me. I must be dreaming, and I was. I floated up out of bed and flew out through the window on a lucid adventure.
Magic powers are a great way to exercise your newfound ability to do absolutely anything. Try moving things with your mind it’s great fun. Sometimes it’s fun to just ‘magic’ somebody away in a puff of smoke.
Walk through walls or windows
Walking through walls can be an experience. The first time I did this I just walked up to a wall and pressed my nose against it. I pushed a little harder and then felt myself easing through the brickwork.
I could feel empty space on the other side after I had pushed my arm all the way through. Eventually I ‘popped’ through and to the other side. An interesting experience.
When I float through windows (why bother opening them?) I always hear a little ‘ping’ sound when I pop through the glass. I have never understood why?
Fly into space
This can be a most exhilarating experience. When you have mastered flying, fly as fast as you can towards the sky.
Sometimes I look down as I am doing this to watch the earth fall away below my feet. Eventually I reach space itself!
I have done this many times. It is great fun sitting cross legged in space looking back at mother Earth! I usually fly back to Earth as fast as I can and stop dead just before I hit the ground. Ironically I usually wind up in my back garden. Not bad navigating!
Meet a famous person
Try calling out for your favourite movie star or pop star. This method will work better if you turn your back and then say “When I turn around, they will be there”. More often than not they are.
This method works far better than trying to get them to materialize in front of you.
Meet up with a loved one who has passed away
This is one of the more controversial things that you can do in a lucid dream although it can be one of the most profound.
I have talked to many people who have asked me if it possible to talk to a loved one who has passed away. I have actually done this myself on many occasions.
The reason that it courts controversy is because some people actually believe that they are talking to their loved ones, whilst others claim it is only a figment of their imagination.
My view on this is ‘Does it matter?’ It can be a wonderful experience to see, touch and hold somebody you hold dear in your heart. Whether they are real or not is irrelevant.
What IS real are the feelings that you experience and the elation you feel during and after the experience.
I view this as one of the most valuable experiences lucid dreaming has opened up for me.
Sexual encounters
I knew I would have to get to this part eventually. It’s the first thing I get asked when explaining to people what you can do in lucid dreams. As with anything in the lucid world, you are only limited by your imagination. If you can imagine it, you can do it!
Lucid dreams can be used to fulfill sexual fantasies or more importantly overcome sexual inhibitions.
Sexual dysfunction can often be a product of the mind. Trying out things in your own lucid world where you cannot cause harm or be harmed either emotionally or physically can be a great way of exploring your internal sexual desires.

I’ve had lucid dreams since childhood. After watching “Lost in Space” episodes in the evening, I would concentrate on the episode before falling asleep. During the night, I would eventually have a dream with Will Robinson, Dr. Smith, and the robot. I could also fly; however, when I was pushed over a hill in one of the dreams, I woke up when I hit the ground.
I’ve been flying in my dreams for the past 40 years since those early lucid dreams. My dreams have developed more. I have traveled to South America and Europe many times in the past ten years, and my dreams have reflected on sites I have traveled to with additional details. Once in Buenos Aires in my dream, I was approached by a couple of thugs who were going to rob me. I put out my hands, and they were hit with the white light that came out of my hands like a force field, and ran away.
The sex dreams, initially, had me waking up before climaxing. Now I wake up afterwards. Every now and again, I have an actor show up in the dream, like Arnold Schwarzenegger, before meeting him at a private gathering. It’s only when I know that I’m in a dream that I can control it. I have had dreams that were so real, when I woke up, I was in another dream thinking that I was awake, then woke up again, for real this time.
I’m not a religious person, but I’ve had spiritual experiences like something was there guiding me in real life – dreamt of my great grandmother on the block beyind my parents street providing me guidance. I still remember the dream.
…and there’s something in graham crackers and milk…whenever I have graham crackers and milk before going to bed, I have many dreams. I’ve tried to write them down, but my writing doesn’t make sense when I look at what I’ve written in the morning.
is it considered being half lucid whenever you know you are dreaming but cant really control it?
