Astral Projection | Astral Travel Techniques

What is Astral Projection or Astral Travel?

When somebody astral projects it is believed that their conscious mind leaves their physical body and enters what is known as the astral body. This skill comes naturally to a lot of people, often from childhood but with others hard work and practice are needed.  Astral projection is also known by other names, the most popular being Astral Travel (or travelling) and Out of Body Experiences.  Another common term often used to describe the Out of Body Experience is OOBE. This is just an abbreviation.

People who astral travel often claim to see a silver umbilical cord linking their astral body to their physical body. Some believe this umbilical link is needed to ensure the conscious mind can find its way back to the physical body. The astral body can travel any distance independent of time or location and can traverse great distances in the blink of an eye. This enables an astral traveller to explore remote areas, visit places they have never physically been before and see things that they have never seen before.  These skills have been employed by several different government agencies in the past to spy on and investigate other world governments taking part in secret projects.  The most notorious of these was project Stargate.  When astral travel is used in this context it is usually referred to as Remote Viewing.  We cover Remote Viewing in more detail in another article on this site.

Learning How to Astral Project

There are several methods that you may employ to Astral Travel.  Whichever method you choose or find easiest to use, you can be pretty sure that it will involve deep relaxation and some ability to meditate.  This is essential, as leaving the physical body requires that the conscious mind and the physical body separate.  As you can imagine, to somebody that isn’t very experienced at this the thought of their conscious mind leaving their physical body can be quite daunting and it is this reason that the body and mind need to be in a very relaxed but attentive state. One of the biggest obstacles people meet when trying to astral project is fear of the unknown.  Students will often learn the deep meditation and relaxation techniques and easily get within reach of leaving their bodies but at the last minute before leaving their physical body fear sets in and prevents any further success.  Overcoming this fear is one of the most important steps that somebody who is learning astral travel can achieve.

There really is nothing to fear when it comes to leaving your body.  A lot of more experienced practitioners believe that everybody travels outside of their body at night after they have fallen asleep.  This is believed to happen after you’ve fallen asleep and your subconscious mind has taken over from your conscious mind.  A lot of people worry that their physical body is somehow vulnerable if they were to leave and travel around in the astral plane.  This is simply not the case, no harm can come to you or your physical body when you are astral projecting.

Unless you’re naturally gifted, you will need to master a relaxation technique of some sort that will get your mind into the relaxed state that it needs to be to move onto the next step.  Once you have got used to relaxing to a sufficient level you will be able to attempt actually leaving your physical form and entering the astral realm. Due to the fact that there are so many relaxation techniques available I will simply go into what I personally do to relax before I attempt Astral Projection.  Following the directions below will enable you to become very relaxed but at the same time attentive.  This is required to prevent yourself falling asleep.  Relaxed attentiveness is key to maintaining your awareness whilst leaving your physical body.

Astral Projection Relaxation Techniques

Before you start this technique I would just like to go over one point and that is your breathing technique. You will often find that meditation guides specifically teach breathing techniques that involved drawing air through the nose and exhaling through the mouth or vice versa.  These techniques are often based around ancient methods and have a lot to do with energy centres, chakras and energy flows around the body.  In my personal experience following these techniques to the letter has never been necessary, I have found it more important to concentrate on the relaxation process itself more than breathing techniques.  I would advise you to breathe in a manner that you find comfortable and natural.

Step One: Try and find somewhere that you can either sit or lie and be quiet without too many distractions or background noise.  The more you perform this relaxation technique the more you will be able to block out distractions. In the early stages I would advise that you find somewhere comfortable and quiet.  Most people find the lying down position the best but if you have a favourite comfortable chair this will do just as well.

Step Two: With your eyes closed, lie perfectly still and just become aware of each part your body.  Concentrate on each part of your body in turn starting at your feet moving up through your legs, through your abdomen, hands, arms, shoulders, neck and head.  At this stage you don’t actually have to do anything just lie still for five minutes and just develop awareness about each part of your body.  You may feel the blood flowing through your fingertips and down your legs. Try to imagine the bones in your feet and the flesh around the bones throughout your entire body. The idea with this step is to focus your mind on your physical being.  After five minutes or so you will notice that your breathing has slowed significantly.  This is good and you should ensure that is the breathing becomes slower it also becomes deeper.  This is about as much concentration on your breathing as you need to do.

Step Three: Now that you have developed the mental awareness of your body it is time to physically relax all those muscles and tendons and let the day to day tensions drain away.  This is achieved by a simple tensing and relaxing technique.  Starting at your feet, clench your toes and hold it for five seconds and then release.  Wait 10 seconds and then repeat.  Next move up to your calf muscles and repeat the same process, tensing the muscles in both legs for five seconds and then release.  Next move up to your thigh muscles and repeat exactly the same process tensing for five seconds, release, repeating twice.

Continue this process until you’ve worked up through your abdomen, stomach muscles, hands, lower arms, shoulders and then into your neck. You can even tense the muscles in your scalp as the last stage in the process. This entire process should take approximately 10 minutes and by the time you have finished, all of the muscles in your body should feel relaxed.

Step Four: This step is quite straightforward. Now that your body is quite relaxed, you just need to lie still and continue with slow deep breaths for a further 10 minutes. You may encounter some problems at this stage one of the main ones being that your face or body gets itchy. Most people get really uptight about this issue and there is absolutely no need.  If you find that you get a tickle on your face or part of your body is itching, just scratch the itch. Don’t worry about disturbing the relaxation process. Worrying about the itch will do more harm than good. Just scratch the itch and continue relaxing. Another problem that you may encounter is that you feel yourself starting to fall asleep.  This can present quite a challenge to some people because your natural instinct will be to sleep.  One of the most obvious signs of this is that you find yourself having little mini dreams or you see a vivid imagery commonly known as ‘Hypnagogic Imagery’. These are the first signs that you are starting to fall asleep but can easily be overcome. The trick is to let your body fall asleep whilst your mind stays attentive.

To prevent yourself falling asleep whilst performing this relaxation technique, I have found the best method that works for me involves visualising a blank piece of white paper. This piece of white paper will give your mind a focal point to prevent your thoughts drifting too far and eventually leading to sleep. Every time you find your mind wandering, you realise that you are then thinking about something else or you have even had a small dream, simply visualise a bright white blank piece of paper in front of you (still with your eyes shut). Whilst staring at that piece of white paper you may notice imagery patterns and vivid colours forming. For the time being just ignore them and focus on the white piece of paper. If you continue to do this successfully for 10 minutes whilst calmly breathing deeply, you will eventually move into the next stage of relaxation.

Step Five: At this stage you should be feeling very relaxed and may have noticed that your arms, legs and body have started to feel extremely heavy. In fact it may feel that even the idea of moving just one finger seems like the way too much trouble! This is a good sign and shows that your body is starting to enter the sleep like state whereas your mind is alert enough to notice these changes. If your mind starts to get into an even more relaxed state and your brain waves start to alter you will more than likely experience what are known as vibrations.

These may occur suddenly and may startle you somewhat but expecting them is the key to accepting them. These manifest differently between different people but they are a definitive sign that you are close to leaving your physical body and entering your astral body. These vibrations will normally take the form of a rushing or whooshing sound in the ears and an all over body feeling which some people describe as being vibrated within. This can feel quite frightening at first but once it has happening to you a few times it is something you will get used to and look forward to as it is a sure sign you are successfully relaxed.

Step Six: You may now start to feel that your body is slightly detached from your physical body even if only by a small amount. Some people feel like they are floating slightly above their body and others feel that they are sinking into the bed slightly below their body. Whichever, it is at this point the need to exert some willpower and force to pull your astral body away from your physical form. There are several techniques to achieve this but one of my favourite is something known as the ‘Rope Technique’ developed by a man called Robert Bruce.

The Rope Technique

This technique involves using an imaginary rope suspended from the roof above you to mentally pull your astral body out of your physical body. Having a focal point to concentrate on seems to facilitate in the belief that you can do this. It is almost as though linking physical exertion to a mental act produces a much stronger significant result. I have had great success with this technique and sometimes it is then literally seconds from committing to the ‘Rope Technique’ before I’ve found myself detached and in the astral plane. You can learn more about the Rope Technique Here where this method of Astral Projection is covered in much greater detail. Don’t worry if this link ceases to work, this technique is covered in several places on the Internet. It is an extremely powerful technique that once mastered will enable you to astral project at will.

Good luck in your astral travelling endeavours.

That happened to me too! When I tried to keep my eyes closed the vibrations slowed until they stopped!

Wow…

I attempted Astral Projection last night for the first time, and boy did I come close. After less than 5 minutes my body was completely asleep (kind of creepy to have your body asleep but your mind awake!!) and was undisturbed by my cats, who were sleeping on the bed with me and kept shaking the bed. I imagined a white piece of paper and soon the vibrations came. First my hands, then my arms, then to the rest of my body. (And that’s after only 7 minutes!) The vibrations were trying to force my eyes open but I fought for it and kept my eyes closed. Soon after, my heart leaped as I felt something weird near my hand. I was separating! So I kept myself calm and I got real close but I couldn’t pull myself out. After 10 minutes of trying to project, the vibrations had stopped and I gave up. I tried a few more times but it didn’t work. It was awesome though, and I’m definitely going to try again tonight! This article really helps!!! Thank you!!

I’m not sure what it is, but every time I do try and astral project, I come really close until the vibrations become really strong. Every time they come, I can feel my eyes being forced open. I don’t even mean to. When I try to keep them shut, it distracts me and I lose everything. Really gets annoying.

Astral Projection Success!

I have been reading about astral projection for about a year now. I have tried several techniques and failed many times. But with constant practice and dedication, I was able to achieve “conscious” astral travel and I freaking LOVED IT!! At first I was terrified from the feelings and sounds of the vibratory effects, because I didn’t know if I was being attacked or possessed by some evil entity or what! Lol. But soon I realized this was perfectly NORMAL! And soon I began letting the vibrations take their effect and I found myself floating right out my bedroom window! Please note, I am not successful “every” time I try it, but most of the time I can achieve a conscious OOBE. FLYING IS POSSIBLE! Just not whilst in “physical form”! Have fun! Take care, be safe and most of all, HAPPY TRAVELS!!

Can you change your form when you do astral travel

Another Question

There’s one more question I just thought of. So, IS a lucid dream astral projection? Because a lucid dream is when your mind is conscious. And you’re in a dream so you are technically “separated” from your physical body. I’m just confused with the difference from lucid dream and astral projection. I know there is a difference, but what is it? Aren’t they both when your mind is conscious?

I think I get it…

Somebody

OKAY. I think I’m starting to understand. So… whenever you dream you do NOT know about your physical body. So technically you are separated from your physical body. When you lucid dream you know you HAVE a physical body but can’t exactly do anything with it. But I have 4 questions.

1) How can you enter the astral plane from a lucid dream (change from subconscious mind to conscious mind)?

2) You said that in a dream it is what your soul, or astral body, sees. But… I’ve had dreams with my friends in it, or with places that I knew (like school) but were altered. How is this what my astral body sees?

3) So… is a nightmare when you see a bad part of the astral plane? Like when I was attacked by aliens… yah. One more thing.

4) So if you go to the highest subdivision of the astral plane will you see Elvis and other dead people there?

I’m excited to go to sleep tonight, now that I know what sleep really is!

If all humans are capable… It makes me want ask “am I even human?”

I understand and believe the concept that every HUMAN (Homosapian) is capable of astral projection, yet for six years, I’ve tried every method I could get my hands on… Does the fact that I’ve failed to do this for so long mean something’s wrong with me? My inability frustrating, and I’m starting to feel as though I’m something less than human.

Jake, i understand your doubts. But i don’t think you doubt you have a soul, mind, and spirit, separate from, but connected to, your physical body. That’s all the astral body is – the soul. It can travel away from the body (your mind does all the time when you daydream) and does so every night when you sleep. Dreams are just what it sees.
But the astral body travels on a slightly different plane of existence, the astral plane, or dreamworld, faeryland, heaven, hell, otherworld, etc. Actually, it has nothing to do with hell, although it does have certain unfortunate places. Everything you imagine comes from there, and some of those things enter our physical plane through us (think stories, art, music, scientific ideas, religions…)
It is a real existing world, and the astral body is a real existing body – just like the physical world and body. It’s just incorporeal, thats all.
And yes, there are angels (and demons, and fae, and other spirits) in the astral plane.
And dead people too (like Elvis!) It’s where you go when you die. Hoorah.

To answer Somebody’s questions

“Freaky body??” It’s just your soul, nothing freaky about it. Unless of course you have no soul. That would be freaky.
Others don’t see you as dead. You’re just asleep. You do this every night when you go to sleep, just unconsciously. You have nothing to worry about. It’s just a controlled form of lucid dreaming, really.
You can do anything in this body you can in a dream – you move around by thinking about it. Since it is your soul, obviously no one can see it. It is essentially like a ghost, only you’re not dead, since it’s still connected by the “astral cord” to your ordinary body.
It is a bit strange to feel yourself leaving your body – you will probably be terrified but relax. That’s just your stupid body thinking somethings wrong, because it’s not usually conscious through this. There is nothing to be afraid of.
And yes, you do enter a different body – your astral body, more commonly known as your SOUL. Or SPIRIT or whatever.
I hope that cleared things up for you…

Scared!!!!!

I want to but I am TERRIFIED! Won’t it be scary to leave your body and see it there, like it’s dead? What does it FEEL like? How do you move around? How do you go BACK to your body? Do other people see you as dead? Do you ACTUALLY enter a different body? Doesn’t it feel weird? What is the POINT? Are you invisible when you are in thisfreaky body? Those aren’t even HALF my questions!!!

Thank you!

Seriously? You think you can leave your body? I seriously doubt this is anything more than a lucid dream.

astral travel

I astral travel all the time and have for as long as I can remember. I love it and now I travel the world physically to see all I saw in my astral travels.I also have the ability to travel to other planets. There is no limit to where you can go but I think people born with this naturally within them can and do go further as there is never any fear. It is totally natural to me.

thanks

Thanks Jane, glad you liked the article. As you said, it’s all in the ‘relaxed but attentive’ state. The key is to realize that you are between the awake and asleep states. Here is where the magic happens!

Wow, first time writing about this to the world at 52 years old.
Only ever told my wife of 34 years, but I have been astral traveling for years.
It took me years to understand what was happening and getting over the fears of getting hurt or falling.
Take small steps. When you give up all the fears, the places you can travel are hard to comprehend.
I travel to different planets, galaxies and much more now. Hard to even understand the people or things I am looking at. Distance, time, and much more can be travelled.
I can also meet and share my travels with other souls during the journey.
I love teaching new travelers on my journeys now.
Wish I could put into words how I can make these journeys in seconds that took me many years to just get 100 feet out of my body. When my fear of falling was gone, things really took off.

  • I have done astral traveling a long time, most of my trips have been to the past lives, but this time I did it into the future. It is very very interesting I must tell, it would be good if have a mentor who can help you on your first trips.
The experience(s) are amazing and it helps to understand the larger meaning of the universe. Indeed, its better to discuss these thing around the selected people, because not many people would not understand that!
I had a strange thing happened to me, my family friend friend has done 2 trips to me and the have some cosmic understanding or chemistry. He is about 20 years older than me and my friends father. We can talk for the hours and look into each other eyes without feeling any kind embarrassment and `read each other mind`. There are no limits nor border in astral world, but in this one there are things which are proper and what not:( I always wanted to meet a person like him, watch out what you wish for and how you send the message out to the universe! But the good thing is we can be friends at astral world..cant wait!

I love war on the astral. U can kill and destroy without reprisal. I raise hell with a subgun, killing all kinds of evil bastards. Join the fun!

  • suntan50

I have no problem disconnecting myself from my physical body, but i have a problem witj my astral self. whenever i leave my body i travel downward, through what looks like water. it is never dark, just a really cloudy blue, then i find myself standing on a platform. the cloudiness vanishes, and all that’s left is black. i looked down the platform and it seems to be a large cylinder. Whenever i reach this platform, i have to wait until i wake up. (i do this when i’m sleeping) How do i move on?

my daughter is seven years old and last week she astral travelled twice…the first time she was
afraid…she did not understand what was happening…i told her not to be afraid and try to explore the house first…which she did sucessfully.my question is…can she visit faraway places like other planets and galaxies for her age…is there no danger.

    • Rhylee Cooper

Did you teach your daughter to do that? Is there anyway you could tteach me? I don’t understand how a 7-year-old can do it and not me. Not that age matters, but was she trying to or did it just happen randomly, involentry?

  • Jill, you daughter will be fine. I was doing astral travel from when I was a child. I didnt not go far from my home and not from this planet until I was in my teens. This is not to say that she will not but I wouldnt have any concerns. If some reason she becomes frightened when in astral travel, her astral spirit will immediately return to her body. This has been my experience and is the same for my friends.
For ‘bigwavesdave’…if you check back here you can google my name and follow the trail and you will find me. I would be only happy to help.
    Happy travels everyone.

    Lots of questions
    (1) im new at astral travelling and i know it takes practice, but i always get so close and can feel my astral body outside of my physical body but never feel vibrations besides a slight tingling or i can feel them but only in my face and toes. What does this mean?
    (2) do you open your eyes when coming out of your physical body or what? I was always confused on that part.
    (3) how do you get back into your physical body? Do you just open your physical body’s eyes, or do you follow your umbillical cord back or what?
    (4) is time in the astral plane the same as in the physical plane or is it like (sorry for the analogy) narnia?
    (5) can you talk/pick up objects when astral traveling?

    • Answer

(1)I know that feeling; just wait a little longer you will feel tingling around other parts of you body so think of a way to get out. It means that the energy of your soul is separating from your physical body.
      (2) You don’t, you have to open your astral eyes or your minds eye and hallucinations and dream sights are your eyesight once you’ve achieved astral travel.
      (3) It is best if you imagine yourself easing yourself into your body or forcibly stopping the sequence (opening your eyes or staring at something).
(4)Yes and no, it really depends on what the sequence is because your travel could be 20 minutes and it really was 20 minutes or 5 years but was only 1 hour of travel. Depending on sequence speed, time is either frozen or sped up.
      (5) Yes! I was able to sit on a funny bouncy seat and have fun and hold an astral blanket.

  • Cris

i got up to the virbration part then sinking but i opened my eyes and didnt know what to do next, that was my first attempt ever to astral projection im going to go for round two….wish me luck! :)

  • adii savidge

ok..so im a little confused… i have been lucid dreaming lately,
and how do you know the difference,
if you go to sleep while trying to astral travel doesnt that mean you are just lucid dreaming? and what is everyones belief on changing the astral plane? because im confused on whats in their and even if you can actually change it. my roccolection or opinion on it is, if it was already there, then how can you change it. and if you changed the astral plane, sa as in your house, then why does it not change in the noral plane. and i belive ghosts are on the astral plane as i see ghosts on a regualr basis, i have never asked where they come from as this would probably confuse them and also scare the bijeebas outta me as i have never talked to one before,
also i know movies are not real. but i watched a pretty freaky one… and the little boy was an astral traveler and he was taken by a demon and he didnt wake up because he couldnt get to his physical body. can there really be demons in the astral plane?

i am just curious to what you guys think about my questions and i think im just searching for answers because i dont want to go in on a whim and come out messed up in the head lol

  • Rhylee Cooper

The weirdest thing just hapened to me! I just attemted to astral project for the first time and as soon as the lights were off, I was comfedarable, and my eyes were closed, the vibrations began. About 5 minutes later I could feel a small separation between me and my body. I tried the Rope Technique to separate myself, but it was a fail.I just don’t understand how I felt the vibrations the first time right away. I think part of the reason I couldn’t disconnect my two parts was because of fright. After watching the movie Insideous about a month ago, I’m scared that if i leave my physical body, I might never return as all the demons and others try to take over my body. Any answers or suggestions? Please comment:) Thanks!

    • Guide

OK. First, for starters its best that you don’t watch HORROR or see anything scary recently before you astral project; understand you CAN come back to your physical body by getting hungry or following some silver cord attached to you or before travel, make your own path.
For me, truthfully the rope technique just does not work, maybe you should test other techniques like the roll out technique, the anchor technique,or even try making your own technique!

If you try hard enough, you can make the vibrations wave across your body with sheer will-power to fully separate and float.

      I hope this helps :)
